In Switzerland, like in many countries, anesthesiology and critical care medicine are two distinct specialties. Even they are often host within the same department, each have their own training requirements, curriculum and field of expertise, as well as distinct professional and organizational cultures. In this narrative review, we report on the involvement of anesthesiologists alongside the intensive care physicians in a swiss university hospital by focusing on the various challenges and opportunities that the division of anaesthesiology faced when transforming and adapting itself rapidly in order to play a key role in the local healthcare system response to the COVID-19 crisis.
